The Aquarium is closed: Aquarium Exhibit Highlights
Penguins African black-footed penguins are found in the South and Southwest portions of Africa. They are the most numerous penguins in our exhibit and many of the birds were born there! The Rockhopper penguins came to New Orleans from Chile. You can easily spot them in the exhibit because they have orange feet and bright yellow tufts of feathers above their eyes. At the Aquarium it takes two staff members to feed these birds: one to feed them and the second to keep track of what each bird eats. That way, we'll make sure our birds are getting plenty of the food and vitamins they need to stay healthy. Penguin feedings at the Aquarium are 10:30 am and 3:00 pm daily. The entire penguin colony survived Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and was evacuated to Monterey Bay Aqaurium in California. On May 22, 2006 they returned home with our beloved sea otters - safe on the wings of FedEx.
